Sherman Brothers Honored with Window on Main Street, U.S.A.

(March 11, 2010) Richard Sherman, together with his brother Robert Sherman (not pictured), receive their tribute window,  the highest honor that Disneyland bestows, in a ceremony with Mickey Mouse at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., on Thursday.  In a tradition begun by Walt Disney, windows along Main Street USA pay tribute to the men and women who were instrumental in the creation and operation of Disneyland.  The Sherman brothers’ window, unveiled this morning, can be seen outside the 20th Century Music Company shop at Disneyland.  The Shermans, who won the Academy Award for their work on Walt Disney’s “Mary Poppins,” composed such familiar Disney theme park classics as “The Tiki Tiki Tiki Room” (theme of The Enchanted Tiki Room), “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” (theme of Carousel of Progress) and “It’s a Small World,” one of the most translated and performed songs on Earth.  (Paul Hiffmeyer/Disneyland)

The first drops of water have begun flowing into Paradise Bay at Disney’s California Adventure which has been dry for several months as Disney Imagineers installed nearly an acre of metal, wiring, nozzles and gadgets which will create “World of Color,” an exciting new nighttime water show that brings Disney animation to life with powerful fountains and amazing projection.  The Disneyland Resort was recently honored with the state of California’s highest environmental award for its water conservation efforts.  When emptying the lagoon, Disneyland worked with the Orange County Water District to send the water through its state-of-the-art Ground Water Replenishment System instead of releasing the water to the ocean through storm drains. After an extensive purification process, the water was stored in Orange County’s underground water basin and contributed to the County’s overall water reserves. New this year to Halloween Time at Disneyland is “Halloween Screams - A Villainous Surprise in the Skies.”  The new fireworks spectacular haunts the nighttime sky throughout the Halloween season.  To start the show, “Master of Scare-omonies” Jack Skellington appears in a flash of fire above Sleeping Beauty Castle.  Haunting melodies fill the air and a Halloween pyrotechnics extravaganza explodes into the night.  Such classic Disney villains as Maleficent, Ursula the Sea Witch and Oogie Boogie join in the “spirit” of the celebration, and even Zero, Jack’s faithful ghost dog, will make an appearance.  Disneyland guests are encouraged to participate in a bone-chilling Halloween Scream-Along during the show. For older kids and adults, Halloween Time offers a new attraction: "Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy" in Tomorrowland at Disneyland.  The scary new experience will begin as a typical Space Mountain adventure, but will suddenly launch voyagers into an uncharted and haunted section of the universe.  Ghosts appear out of the starry darkness and swirling galaxies of Space Mountain, reaching out as if to grab guests as they speed through space.  The exhilarating drops and curves of the journey are punctuated by piercing screams, creepy sound effects and haunting music.  (Disney)

At a press conference today at the El Capitan Theatre, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Jay Rasulo, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Geraldine Knatz, Ph.d, together announced that Disney Cruise Line plans to reposition the Disney Wonder cruise ship from its Florida base in Port Canaveral to the West Coast in 2011.  An agreement for two-years, with a three-year extension option is set to be considered by the Port of Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners on April 2, 2009.  The addition of a new homeport for Disney Cruise Line is part of the overall expansion plan for the company, which will provide Disney fans with opportunities to sail with Disney on both the East and West Coasts.  (Paul Hiffmeyer/Disney Destinations)

The latest sign of expansion and "re-Imagineering" in Disney's California Adventure park is the new illuminated "Paradise Pier" sign on the "California Screamin'" roller coaster.  The sign reflects the "vintage Disney" themeing that is part of the Disney's California Adventure expansion. It was designed in the style of beachfront amusement park signs from the 1920s and '30s, the era when Walt Disney first arrived in Hollywood and begin producing animated cartoons. As the "re-Imagineering" continues at Disney's California Adventure this spring, the ferris wheel attraction will reopen as "Mickey's Fun Wheel" and the Games of the Boardwalk will reopen in completely new versions featuring Disney characters.
